MY ROLE IN FILM EXPLAINED:
Although no two days were the same, my role in film and TV generally looked like this:
I created 3D models and renders of proposed designs, either following others' directions or using my own imagination. This process allowed the design to be reviewed, iterated upon, and approved. 3D models are advantageous because they are easily understood by everyone, unlike technical drawings which may lack atmosphere, or be misinterpreted. Given the substantial budgets involved, securing informed agreement from all top decision-makers was essential.
Afterward, I produced technical 2D "working drawings" derived from the 3D models. These drawings, which included floor plans, elevations, sections, and detailed elements, were used by the construction department to execute the build.
I frequently conducted surveys of existing locations. Using this information, we could design and plan for alterations such as building, painting, and set dressing. For example, we might convert a Cape Town warehouse into a Somalian prison, a Thai marketplace, or an LA airport.
I was responsible for overseeing the construction and scenicing of my sets, ensuring that the set's 'vision' was realised. My duties did not include performing physical construction myself.
